Well, there's a story behind these sparkly crystals. In the famous Thomas Mountains Range, near Topaz Mountain in Utah, there are some abandoned fluorspar mines (fluorspar is a chalky purple stuff that they make fluoride for your teeth from).   One mine in particular is small, only about 100 feet deep, and about a quarter caved in. In front of the mine entrance is an old "out of commission" hydro mining machine: druzymine2.jpg (21577 bytes) (for the rockhounds who might know where I'm talking about). The entrance is all most completely blocked by earth: druzymine1.jpg (23630 bytes). This is a very dangerous mine and I'm not advocating doing what I do, BUT . . . I go inside, crawling on my belly - once I'm in I can stand up -  here's me and Johnny inside: druzymine3.jpg (17750 bytes). There is a big pile of earth that has been caving in from the ceiling for years. I climb to the top of the pile (right under the most dangerous spot) and pound my "gad bar" into the ceiling at a likely spot (I can usually see crystals peeking at me). After some very hard hammering I tell everyone to clear out and . . . I PULL AND RUN AT THE SAME TIME! Here are some chunks fresh from the mine: druzymine4.jpg (22875 bytes) These are druzy calcite crystals about two-thirds or more of which are replaced by purple fluorite. Some of the most glittery stuff you'll ever see! Sometimes it's bright purple and sometimes it's VERY Dark Purple. Sometime mixed with clear calcite and some times yellow calcite. The calcite also forms in small (3 to 4mm) cubes and sometimes they are all together. I risked my life for these beauties!
