Opal From Andamooka field in Australia This is a matrix type opal that has been treated to make it look better. When this opal comes from the ground it is a pale white color. It is soaked in concentrated sugar solution and then soaked in acid. What this does is change the sugar to carbon and the white rock turns dark. When this happens you can see all of the lovely colored opal that was not visible against the white background. This treatment has been around for many years it is not something new. This treatment is permanent it will not wash off. The carbon grains are actually inside of the rock where the sugar soaked in. This opal will be a satin finish when cut because of all the minute pores in the stone and it is very pretty. Metaphysical: Opal is believed to symbolize confidence, purity and serenity. Some believe it can be used to reach the highest spiritual level and increase internal vision. In English speaking countries, opal is considered to bring good luck. |
